Here are some tips on the best ways to keep your alpaca garment clean and in good shape for many years.
Alpaca products can be washed in a washing machine as long as there is NO AGITATION. Use a handwash or delicate cycle. Luke warm water is the best for both the wash cycle and the rinse cycle (about 100-105 degrees). Do not use a lingerie bag. Spin on lowest speed possible.
If your machine does not have a handwash cycle, we recommend gently soaking your garment in the sink with a couple of drops of baby shampoo. Just swish your alpaca item very gently in the water and rinse gently. Don't scrub or agitate. Gently squeeze the water out. Laying the garment on a towel and gently rolling up the towel to absorb some of the water works well too.
Lay larger alpaca garments flat to dry. Smaller items, such as socks, can be gently drapped over a drying rack or towel rack.
Do not use Woolite! This is to harsh for alpaca products.
Dry cleaning is acceptable for alpaca garments also, just make sure to tell your dry cleaner that the product is made of alpaca.
Though not as susceptible as wool items, during the summer months, your alpaca garments should be stored away from possible moth infestation.
With proper care, your alpaca garments will give you many years of soft warm enjoyment and you too will have an alpaca heirloom.
